CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION CENTER

The following are the programs that make the ISD Career Education and Technology Center outstanding.

High School Education for Employment (EFE)

A variety of courses are available to students in the standard, modified and developmental curricula. Teachers are trained and certified in the subject area in which they teach and tailor courses to meet individual student needs. Some curricula is offered in a two-, three-, or four-year sequence, giving the students comprehensive training. Many students enter the work force with these skills upon graduation or pursue further training. Overall, emphasis is on developing skills for employment purposes.

Junior High Orientation

All junior high students rotate among various vocational courses for nine weeks. They learn pre-vocational skills in metals/CAD, orientation to industrial occupations (OTIO), foods and the visual arts. They also meet with a guidance counselor before they decide what course(s) to take in high school.

Work-based Learning

Activities are provided which involve actual work experience or connect classroom learning to work. The least intensive level of exposure occurs in work experience through cooperative education or vocational courses. Freshmen get hands on experience at a variety of different job sites on campus to give them a taste of the working world and to develop their interests and abilities related to the world of work. The next level integrates academic and vocational/occupational curricula, as in the case of Tech Prep, but would not include work site experience. At the highest level, academic and vocational/occupational curriculum is integrated with work site experience.

Tech Prep

This offers four years of sequential coursework at the secondary and post-secondary levels to prepare students for technical careers. Programs typically begin in 11th grade and result in an award of an associate's degree or certificate after two years of post-secondary training. Coursework integrates academic and vocational subject matter and may provide opportunities for dual enrollment in academic and vocational courses at secondary and post-secondary institutions.
